Thy name:
"Neither shall thy name any more be called Abram, but thy name shall be Abraham; for a father of many nations have I made thee." {Gen 17:5} + "And God said unto Abraham, As for Sarai thy wife, thou shalt not call her name Sarai, but Sarah [shall] her name [be]." {Gen 17:15} + "And he erected there an altar, and called it Elelohe-Israel." {Gen 33:20} + "And God said unto him, Thy name [is] Jacob: thy name shall not be called any more Jacob, but Israel shall be thy name: and he called his name Israel." {Gen 35:10} + "These [are] the names of the men which Moses sent to spy out the land. And Moses called Oshea the son of Nun Jehoshua." {Num 13:16} + "And he sent by the hand of Nathan the prophet; and he called his name Jedidiah, because of the LORD." {2Sm 12:25} + "Unto this day they do after the former manners: they fear not the LORD, neither do they after their statutes, or after their ordinances, or after the law and commandment which the LORD commanded the children of Jacob, whom he named Israel;" {2Kg 17:34} + "And the Gentiles shall see thy righteousness, and all kings thy glory: and thou shalt be called by a new name, which the mouth of the LORD shall name. ... Thou shalt no more be termed Forsaken; neither shall thy land any more be termed Desolate: but thou shalt be called Hephzibah, and thy land Beulah: for the LORD delighteth in thee, and thy land shall be married." {Isa 62:2-4} + "And ye shall leave your name for a curse unto my chosen: for the Lord GOD shall slay thee, and call his servants by another name:" {Isa 65:15} + "And he brought him to Jesus. And when Jesus beheld him, he said, Thou art Simon the son of Jona: thou shalt be called Cephas, which is by interpretation, A stone." {Jhn 1:42} + "He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith unto the churches; To him that overcometh will I give to eat of the hidden manna, and will give him a white stone, and in the stone a new name written, which no man knoweth saving he that receiveth [it]." {Rev 2:17}
i.e. a prince of God
as a prince:
Or, according to the LXX, Vulgate, Houbigant, Dathe, and Rosenmuller, "because thou hast power with God, thou shalt also prevail with men." There is a beautiful antithesis between the two terms, with אלהים, Elohim, God, the Almighty, with אנשׁים, anashim, weak, feeble men, as the word imports; seeing thou hast had power with the Almighty, surely thou shalt prevail over perishing mortals.
"And Jacob was left alone; and there wrestled a man with him until the breaking of the day." {Gen 32:24} + "He took his brother by the heel in the womb, and by his strength he had power with God: ... Even the LORD God of hosts; the LORD [is] his memorial." {Hsa 12:3-5}
with men:
"And Jacob said, Sell me this day thy birthright." {Gen 25:31} + "And Isaac trembled very exceedingly, and said, Who? where [is] he that hath taken venison, and brought [it] me, and I have eaten of all before thou camest, and have blessed him? yea, [and] he shall be blessed. ... And he said, Is not he rightly named Jacob? for he hath supplanted me these two times: he took away my birthright; and, behold, now he hath taken away my blessing. And he said, Hast thou not reserved a blessing for me?" {Gen 27:33-36} + "And God came to Laban the Syrian in a dream by night, and said unto him, Take heed that thou speak not to Jacob either good or bad." {Gen 31:24} + "And Jacob was wroth, and chode with Laban: and Jacob answered and said to Laban, What [is] my trespass? what [is] my sin, that thou hast so hotly pursued after me? ... And early in the morning Laban rose up, and kissed his sons and his daughters, and blessed them: and Laban departed, and returned unto his place." {Gen 31:36-55} + "And Esau ran to meet him, and embraced him, and fell on his neck, and kissed him: and they wept." {Gen 33:4} + "Then Saul said to David, Blessed [be] thou, my son David: thou shalt both do great [things], and also shalt still prevail. So David went on his way, and Saul returned to his place." {1Sm 26:25} + "When a man's ways please the LORD, he maketh even his enemies to be at peace with him." {Prv 16:7} - Cross Reference Bible Search
