a prophet:
The word navi, rendered a prophet, not only signifies one who foretell future events, but also an intercessor, instructor. See note on "Then Samuel took a vial of oil, and poured [it] upon his head, and kissed him, and said, [Is it] not because the LORD hath anointed thee [to be] captain over his inheritance?" {1Sm 10:1}; see note on "And it came to pass [after] many days, that the word of the LORD came to Elijah in the third year, saying, Go, shew thyself unto Ahab; and I will send rain upon the earth. ... And the hand of the LORD was on Elijah; and he girded up his loins, and ran before Ahab to the entrance of Jezreel." {1Kg 18:1-46}; and see note on "He that speaketh in an [unknown] tongue edifieth himself; but he that prophesieth edifieth the church." {1Co 14:4}. The title was also given to men eminent for eloquence and literary abilities. Hence Aaron, because he was the spokesman of Moses to the Egyptian king, is called a prophet. "And he shall be thy spokesman unto the people: and he shall be, [even] he shall be to thee instead of a mouth, and thou shalt be to him instead of God." {Exd 4:16} + "And the LORD said unto Moses, See, I have made thee a god to Pharaoh: and Aaron thy brother shall be thy prophet." {Exd 7:1} + "And the LORD spake unto Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt, saying, ... Speak ye unto all the congregation of Israel, saying, In the tenth [day] of this month they shall take to them every man a lamb, according to the house of [their] fathers, a lamb for an house:" {Exd 12:1-3} + "And Moses' father in law said unto him, The thing that thou doest [is] not good." {Exd 18:17} + "And the LORD said unto Moses, See, I have made thee a god to Pharaoh: and Aaron thy brother shall be thy prophet." {Exd 7:1} + "[Saying], Touch not mine anointed, and do my prophets no harm." {1Ch 16:22} + "The secret of the LORD [is] with them that fear him; and he will shew them his covenant." {Psa 25:14} + "Which [covenant] he made with Abraham, and his oath unto Isaac; ... [Saying], Touch not mine anointed, and do my prophets no harm." {Psa 105:9-15} + "God, who at sundry times and in divers manners spake in time past unto the fathers by the prophets," {Hbr 1:1}
pray:
"Then it shall be, because he hath sinned, and is guilty, that he shall restore that which he took violently away, or the thing which he hath deceitfully gotten, or that which was delivered him to keep, or the lost thing which he found," {Lev 6:4} + "And the priest shall make an atonement for him before the LORD: and it shall be forgiven him for any thing of all that he hath done in trespassing therein." {Lev 6:7} + "And Samuel said, Gather all Israel to Mizpeh, and I will pray for you unto the LORD." {1Sm 7:5} + "And the children of Israel said to Samuel, Cease not to cry unto the LORD our God for us, that he will save us out of the hand of the Philistines." {1Sm 7:8} + "And all the people said unto Samuel, Pray for thy servants unto the LORD thy God, that we die not: for we have added unto all our sins [this] evil, to ask us a king." {1Sm 12:19} + "Moreover as for me, God forbid that I should sin against the LORD in ceasing to pray for you: but I will teach you the good and the right way:" {1Sm 12:23} + "And David spake unto the LORD when he saw the angel that smote the people, and said, Lo, I have sinned, and I have done wickedly: but these sheep, what have they done? let thine hand, I pray thee, be against me, and against my father's house." {2Sm 24:17} + "And the king answered and said unto the man of God, Intreat now the face of the LORD thy God, and pray for me, that my hand may be restored me again. It may be the LORD thy God will hear all the words of Rabshakeh, whom the king of Assyria his master hath sent to reproach the living God; and will reprove the words which the LORD thy God hath heard: wherefore lift up [thy] prayer for the remnant that are left." {2Kg 19:2-4} + "Therefore take unto you now seven bullocks and seven rams, and go to my servant Job, and offer up for yourselves a burnt offering; and my servant Job shall pray for you: for him will I accept: lest I deal with you [after your] folly, in that ye have not spoken of me [the thing which is] right, like my servant Job." {Job 42:8} + "Then said the LORD unto me, Pray not for this people for [their] good." {Jer 14:11} + "Then said the LORD unto me, Though Moses and Samuel stood before me, [yet] my mind [could] not [be] toward this people: cast [them] out of my sight, and let them go forth." {Jer 15:1} + "But if they [be] prophets, and if the word of the LORD be with them, let them now make intercession to the LORD of hosts, that the vessels which are left in the house of the LORD, and [in] the house of the king of Judah, and at Jerusalem, go not to Babylon." {Jer 27:18} + "Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: ... Confess [your] faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much." {Jms 5:14-16} + "If any man see his brother sin a sin [which is] not unto death, he shall ask, and he shall give him life for them that sin not unto death. There is a sin unto death: I do not say that he shall pray for it." {1Jn 5:16} + "And if any man will hurt them, fire proceedeth out of their mouth, and devoureth their enemies: and if any man will hurt them, he must in this manner be killed. ...
